A 35-year-old non-smoker female presented to Out-patient Department (OPD) with the complaints of inability to conceive. She was married for 7 years but had no children. She also gave history of recurrent cold, cough, with copious expectoration. Her past history was significant as in her childhood. She had a frequent visit to the pediatrician for recurrent chest infections. On examination, her vital parameters were within a normal limit. On auscultation, diffuse ronchi and crackles (more on the left side) were heard and apex beat heard on the right side in fifth intercostal space. Ultrasound of abdomen revealed situs in versus. X-ray paranasal sinuses revealed mucosal thickening with hazy sinuses. What can be the cause of infertility in this patient?
Answer: Kartagener’s Syndrome.
It is a type of primary ciliary dyskinesia characterised clinically by the triad of chronic sinusitis, bronchiectasis and situs in versus. This is associated with the infertility in male and subfertility in female due to a defective motility of cilia in the fallopian tube.
