A 36-year-old woman with a term pregnancy comes into labor and delivers vaginally. She had never visited any healthcare facility during her pregnancy. She does not have any significant medical history and takes only iron tablets from the Anganwadi worker in her village. She is a meat eater and has pets in her house. Her infant is born with an enlarged head and her eyes are red with excessive tearing. Higher imaging shows generalized intracranial calcifications in newborn. Which infection during pregnancy can cause these abnormal findings in the infant?
Solution
The triad of hydrocephalus, intracranial calcifications, and chorioretinitis suggests congenital toxoplasmosis. The causative organism is Toxoplasma gondii which is transmitted via household cats and eating raw meat.
